When the time comes to say goodbye to a much-loved pet, being able to remain at home can make an incredibly difficult day feel a little gentler.
The Loving Vet provides home pet euthanasia in Ashton-in-Makerfield, allowing dogs and cats to be put peacefully to sleep in familiar surroundings, with the people they love beside them.
I’m Dr Benite Oddy, a veterinary surgeon based nearby in Newton-le-Willows. Ashton-in-Makerfield is one of my most local service areas and a location I am very happy to travel to for home euthanasia appointments.
Rather than taking your pet on a final journey to a veterinary practice, I come to you, giving you the privacy and time to say goodbye at home.
A peaceful goodbye without travelling to a veterinary practice
For an elderly or poorly pet, travelling can become increasingly difficult.
Dogs with arthritis, weakness or mobility problems may struggle getting into a car. Meanwhile others become anxious when visiting a veterinary surgery.
Home euthanasia removes that final journey.
Your dog might be resting in their favourite bed, cuddled beside you on the sofa or relaxing somewhere else they feel comfortable. Family members can be present, and the appointment can take place somewhere that feels familiar rather than clinical.
For cats that find travelling or veterinary visits stressful, remaining at home can provide the same benefit.
My aim is always to make the experience calm, gentle and unhurried for both you and your pet.
What happens during a home euthanasia appointment?
When I arrive at your home in Ashton-in-Makerfield, I will first spend some time talking everything through with you. There is no need to rush, and you will have an opportunity to ask any questions you may have.
Your pet will initially receive a sedative injection, allowing them to gradually become very relaxed and sleepy while you remain beside them. Once they are deeply relaxed, the final euthanasia medication is administered.
I will explain each stage of the process tho so that you know what to expect and can concentrate on being with your pet.
For dogs, the price of the euthanasia appointment does not increase according to their size or weight, including giant breeds.
A safety note for cats
For your cat’s safety, sedation must be given either indoors or in a secure, cat-proofed garden.
Even cats that are elderly, very weak or unwell can occasionally move unexpectedly after the sedative has been administered. If a cat were to escape while becoming sleepy, they could be extremely vulnerable and difficult to safely retrieve.
For this reason, I’m unable to sedate cats in gardens where there is any possibility of them getting out.

I can usually accommodate an appointment for a gentle goodbye within 2 to 3 days and sometimes have availability for same-day bookings.
Availability varies from day to day, so please contact me if you need an appointment and I can let you know what is currently possible.
We encourage owners to try and book ahead where possible, as unfortunately I cannot guarantee availability in an emergency.
I also offer evening, weekend and Bank Holiday appointments. This can be helpful if several members of your family would like to be there to say goodbye.
There is no additional appointment charge for evenings, weekends or Bank Holidays.
Is it the right time to say goodbye?
Knowing when to put a much-loved pet to sleep can be extremely difficult. This is especially the case when their health has declined gradually.
It can help to think about their overall quality of life: whether they are comfortable, eating and drinking, able to rest, interested in family life and still enjoying some of the things that previously made them happy.
Keeping track of good days and bad days can also help you recognise changes that might otherwise be difficult to see.
If you’re struggling with the decision, you can search online for a pet quality of life survey or quality of life assessment. These can provide a useful framework for considering your pet’s wellbeing and discussing your concerns with your usual veterinary practice.
Pet cremation and aftercare
If you would like us to arrange cremation following your pet’s home euthanasia appointment, both private and communal pet cremation options are available.
With private cremation, your pet is cremated individually and their ashes are returned to you. With communal cremation, individual ashes are not returned.
Alternatively, some families choose to keep their pet for home burial where this is appropriate.
