What Happens During a Home Euthanasia Appointment?
When I arrive at your home, I will first spend some time talking with you and meeting your pet.
I understand that families may be frightened about what to expect, particularly if they have never experienced euthanasia before. I will explain the process and answer any questions you have before we begin.
We can then choose somewhere comfortable for your pet.
A sedative is given first and your pet will gradually become very sleepy and relaxed. You can remain beside them, stroke them and talk to them as they settle.
Once your pet is deeply sedated, the final euthanasia medication is administered.
I will talk you through the process gently so that you understand what is happening and can concentrate on being with your pet rather than worrying about what comes next.
Afterwards, you can have some private time with them to say goodbye.
Pet Cremation and Aftercare in Wigan
You can choose what you would like to happen to your pet afterwards.
The Loving Vet can arrange private or communal cremation if you would like us to take care of your pet’s aftercare.
With private cremation, your pet is cremated individually and their ashes can be returned to your address for a surcharge or you’re welcome to collect your pet’s ashes from the crematorium, which is free of charge.
With communal cremation, your pet’s cremation takes place along with other pets and their ashes are not available for collection or return to you.
You are also completely welcome to make your own arrangements if you prefer. There is no obligation to use our cremation service.

This is often the hardest question of all.

Rather than focusing on one individual symptom, it can help to think about whether your pet is still able to enjoy the things that have always made their life worthwhile and whether their good days continue to outweigh their difficult ones.

Will my pet be sedated first?
Yes. Sedation forms an important part of my approach to home euthanasia.
The aim is to allow your pet to become deeply relaxed and sleepy before the final medication is administered.
Can my pet be put to sleep in the garden?
If circumstances allow and your garden is where your pet feels happiest and most comfortable, an appointment can often take place outside.
A note about cats and outdoor sedation: For your cat’s safety, sedation must be given either indoors or in a secure, cat-proofed garden. Even cats that are elderly, very weak or unwell can occasionally move unexpectedly after the sedative has been administered. If a cat were to escape while becoming sleepy, they could be extremely vulnerable and difficult to safely retrieve. For this reason, I’m unable to sedate cats in gardens where there is any possibility of them getting out.
We can discuss what will work best for your pet when arranging the visit.
Can my other pets be present?
Yes, if you feel this is appropriate.
Some families choose to allow other pets to remain nearby or to see their companion afterwards. Others prefer them to be elsewhere during the appointment. There is no requirement either way.
Can my children be present?
This is a personal decision and will depend on your child’s age, understanding and relationship with your pet.
Some families find being present helps children understand what has happened and gives them an opportunity to say goodbye, while others decide it would be better for their child not to attend.
What happens to my pet afterwards?
You can choose private cremation, communal cremation or make your own aftercare arrangements.
If you choose private cremation, your pet’s ashes can be returned to you afterwards for a surcharge or you’re welcome to collect from the crematorium, which is free of charge.
