A gentle goodbye for your pet, close to home

Saying goodbye to a much-loved pet is one of the hardest decisions we have to make. When the time comes, many families would prefer their dog or cat to remain peacefully at home rather than having to make a final journey to a veterinary practice.

The Loving Vet provides home pet euthanasia in Haydock, allowing your pet to stay somewhere familiar and comfortable, surrounded by the people they love.

I’m Dr Benite Oddy, a veterinary surgeon based nearby in Newton-le-Willows. Haydock is one of my most local service areas, making it a particularly convenient location for me to provide home euthanasia appointments.

My aim is to make your pet’s final moments as peaceful and dignified as possible, while giving you the privacy and time to say goodbye in your own way.

Saying goodbye without a final journey to the vets

For an elderly or poorly pet, travelling to a veterinary practice can become increasingly difficult.

Dogs with arthritis, weakness or mobility problems may find getting into a car uncomfortable, while other dogs become anxious as soon as they realise they are going to the vets. Cats can also find carriers, car journeys and unfamiliar surroundings particularly stressful.

With home euthanasia, that final journey isn’t necessary.

Your pet can remain in their favourite bed, beside you on the sofa or somewhere else in the home where they naturally feel comfortable.

There is no waiting room and no unfamiliar clinical environment. Instead, you can concentrate on being together.

What happens during the appointment?

When I arrive at your home in Haydock, I will explain what to expect and give you an opportunity to ask any questions before we begin.

Your pet will initially receive a sedative injection, allowing them to gradually become very sleepy and relaxed while you remain beside them.

Once they are deeply relaxed, the final euthanasia medication is administered. Your pet will lose consciousness before their heart gently stops.

There is no need to rush the appointment, and I will guide you through each stage so that you know what to expect.

For dogs, the price of the euthanasia appointment does not increase according to their size or weight, including giant breeds.

A safety note for cats

For your cat’s safety, sedation must be given either indoors or in a secure, cat-proofed garden.

Even cats that are elderly, very weak or unwell can occasionally move unexpectedly after the sedative has been administered. If a cat were to escape while becoming sleepy, they could be extremely vulnerable and difficult to safely retrieve.

For this reason, I’m unable to sedate cats in gardens where there is any possibility of them getting out.

Appointments in Haydock

Because The Loving Vet is based just a short distance away in Newton-le-Willows, Haydock is one of the areas I particularly welcome appointments from.

I can usually accommodate an appointment for a gentle goodbye within 2 to 3 days and sometimes have availability for same-day bookings.

Availability varies from day to day, so please contact me if you need an appointment and I can let you know what is currently possible.

We encourage owners to try and book ahead where possible, as unfortunately I cannot guarantee availability in an emergency.

Evening, weekend and Bank Holiday appointments

I understand that families sometimes want to arrange an appointment for a time when everyone who would like to say goodbye can be present.

I therefore offer evening, weekend and Bank Holiday appointments, subject to availability.

When is it time to say goodbye?

It isn’t always easy to recognise when an elderly or poorly pet has reached the point where euthanasia may be the kindest option.

Their quality of life can change gradually, making the decision particularly difficult when you see them every day.

It can help to think about their comfort, appetite, mobility, ability to rest, interest in family life and whether they are still enjoying some of the things that previously made them happy.

Keeping track of good days and bad days can also help.

If you’re struggling with the decision, you can search online for a pet quality of life survey or quality of life assessment. These can provide a useful framework for considering your pet’s wellbeing and discussing your concerns with your usual veterinary practice.

Cremation and aftercare

If you would like cremation following your pet’s home euthanasia appointment, The Loving Vet can arrange this for you.

Both private and communal pet cremation options are available.

With private cremation, your pet is cremated individually and their ashes are returned to you. With communal cremation, individual ashes are not returned.

Alternatively, some families choose to keep their pet for home burial where this is appropriate.

I can explain the different options to you so that you can decide what feels right for your pet and family.
