A gentle goodbye for your pet, in the comfort of home
Making the decision to say goodbye to a much-loved pet can be one of the hardest parts of sharing your life with them. When the time comes, many families would prefer their dog or cat to remain somewhere they know and feel safe, rather than having to make a final journey to a veterinary practice.
The Loving Vet provides compassionate home pet euthanasia in Newton-le-Willows, allowing your pet to be surrounded by familiar sights, smells and the people they love.
I’m Dr Benite Oddy, a veterinary surgeon based here in Newton-le-Willows, and I provide gentle home euthanasia for dogs and cats throughout the local area and across the North West.
My aim is to make an incredibly difficult day as peaceful, unhurried and dignified as possible for both you and your pet.
Home euthanasia for dogs and cats in Newton-le-Willows
Having your pet put to sleep at home means they can remain in the place where they are most comfortable.
For an elderly or poorly dog, this might mean lying in their favourite bed, resting beside you on the sofa or settling in a favourite spot in the garden. For a cat, it could simply mean being somewhere quiet and familiar without the stress of travelling in a carrier or visiting a veterinary practice.
There is no need for a clinical environment and no waiting room. I come to your home in Newton-le-Willows and give you and your pet the time and privacy you need.
Family members can be present if they wish, and you can choose a comfortable place in your home for the appointment.
What happens during a home euthanasia appointment?
When I arrive, I will first spend a little time talking everything through with you. I know that families can feel apprehensive about what to expect, so there is no need to rush.
Your pet will initially be given a sedative injection. This allows them to become very relaxed and sleepy while they are with you.
Once they are deeply relaxed, the final euthanasia medication is administered. Your pet will lose consciousness before their heart gently stops.
I will guide you through the process and explain what is happening so that you know what to expect.
The purpose of providing euthanasia at home is to make your pet’s final moments as calm and comfortable as we can, while allowing you to say goodbye privately in familiar surroundings.
Home dog euthanasia in Newton-le-Willows
For many dogs, home euthanasia can be especially helpful.
Older dogs may have arthritis, weakness, breathing difficulties or other conditions that make getting into a car and travelling uncomfortable. Some dogs also find veterinary practices frightening or become anxious as soon as they realise where they are going.
With dog euthanasia at home, that final journey can be avoided.
Instead, your dog can stay somewhere they associate with comfort and security while I come to them.
I also don’t believe families with large dogs should have to pay more simply because of their dog’s size. My home euthanasia fee does not increase according to the weight or breed of your dog, including giant breeds.
How do I know when it is time to say goodbye?
One of the most difficult questions owners face is knowing when the right time has come.
There is rarely one single sign that provides an obvious answer. Instead, it can help to consider your pet’s overall quality of life.
Think about whether they are still eating and drinking comfortably, able to rest, interested in the people and activities they previously enjoyed, able to move around without significant difficulty, and whether they are experiencing pain or distress that can no longer be adequately controlled.
It can also be helpful to keep track of good days and bad days, particularly when changes happen gradually.
If you are struggling with this decision, you can search online for a pet quality of life survey or quality of life assessment. These can provide a useful structure for thinking about the different aspects of your pet’s wellbeing and may help you discuss your concerns with your usual veterinary practice.

We encourage owners to try and book ahead where possible, as unfortunately I cannot guarantee availability in an emergency.
Appointments are available during the daytime and in the evening, which can be particularly helpful when family members would like to be present.

Pet cremation and aftercare
You can decide what you would like to happen after your pet has passed away.
Some families choose to keep their pet at home for burial where this is appropriate, while others would prefer cremation.
The Loving Vet can arrange pet cremation after a home euthanasia appointment, including both private and communal cremation options.
With a private cremation, your pet is cremated individually and their ashes are returned to you. If you choose communal cremation, your pet is cremated alongside other pets and individual ashes are not returned.
I can discuss the available options with you so that you can decide what feels right for your family.
A note about cats and outdoor sedation
For your cat’s safety, sedation must be given either indoors or in a secure, cat-proofed garden.
Even cats that are elderly, very weak or unwell can occasionally move unexpectedly after the sedative has been administered. If a cat were to escape while becoming sleepy, they could be extremely vulnerable and difficult to safely retrieve.
For this reason, I’m unable to sedate cats in gardens where there is any possibility of them getting out.

Saying goodbye at home
There is no perfect way to say goodbye to a pet who has been part of your family.
For some families, however, being able to avoid a final car journey and allow their pet to remain peacefully at home can make an incredibly difficult experience a little gentler.
