I am a qualified veterinary surgeon based in Newton-le-Willows, to the west of Manchester. From here, I provide home euthanasia appointments across Manchester and particularly the western side of Greater Manchester, including areas around Salford, Eccles, Worsley, Swinton and Trafford.

A veterinary practice is an important place throughout our pets’ lives, but when the time comes to say goodbye, some families would rather avoid one final journey.
An elderly dog may struggle to get into the car because of arthritis or weakness. A poorly cat may find being placed into a carrier particularly stressful. Other pets become anxious simply because they recognise the journey to their veterinary practice.
Home euthanasia removes that journey altogether.
Instead, I come to you.
Your pet can remain somewhere familiar like lying in their usual bed, curled up on the sofa beside you or resting on a favourite blanket.
There is no waiting room and no unfamiliar clinical environment. You can decide who you would like to be present, and the appointment can be adapted around your individual pet wherever it is safe and appropriate to do so.
When Is the Right Time to Consider Euthanasia?
Knowing when to say goodbye is often one of the most difficult parts of owning a pet.
There isn’t always one obvious moment when the decision becomes clear. With elderly pets and those living with chronic illness, quality of life can sometimes decline gradually.
It may help to think about changes in your pet’s:
- Comfort and pain levels
- Ability to stand, walk and move around
- Appetite and drinking
- Breathing
- Toileting
- Sleep and ability to settle comfortably
- Interest in family members and surroundings
- Enjoyment of walks, food, affection or other favourite activities
- Number of good days compared with difficult days
Another useful resource is a pet quality-of-life survey or questionnaire. You can search for these online and use one to consider different aspects of your pet’s wellbeing in a more structured way.
They can be particularly helpful when changes have occurred slowly and it has become difficult to judge how much your pet’s everyday life has altered.
A quality-of-life questionnaire isn’t a replacement for veterinary advice or examination, but it can help you organise your thoughts and identify areas of concern.
Home Dog Euthanasia in Manchester
For an elderly or seriously unwell dog, being able to remain at home can make their final day considerably less stressful.
Dogs with arthritis, neurological conditions or mobility difficulties may find travelling uncomfortable. Large and giant-breed dogs can become particularly difficult to move when they are weak, while anxious dogs may become distressed by visiting a veterinary practice.
At home, your dog can settle somewhere they already know.
When I arrive, I will talk you through what will happen and give you an opportunity to ask questions.
Your dog will receive sedation before the final euthanasia medication is administered.
The sedation is selected with your individual pet in mind and allows them to become increasingly sleepy and relaxed while you remain with them.
Once your dog is deeply sedated, I will gently guide you through the next stage.
Home Cat Euthanasia in Manchester
For many cats, avoiding a final car journey is one of the greatest benefits of home euthanasia.
Cats can be very attached to their territory and may find being placed into a carrier, travelling by car and entering an unfamiliar veterinary environment particularly stressful.
Home euthanasia means your cat can instead remain somewhere they recognise.
They might choose their bed, a favourite chair, a blanket, your lap or simply a quiet part of the house where they normally feel comfortable.
Sedation is given before the final euthanasia medication so that your cat can become sleepy and relaxed first.
Can My Cat Be Sedated in the Garden?
For your cat’s safety, sedation must be given either indoors or within a secure, cat-proofed garden.
Even an elderly, very weak or seriously unwell cat can occasionally surprise us with an unexpected burst of movement. If a cat were able to escape after receiving a sedative, they could become extremely vulnerable as the medication began to take effect.
For this reason, I cannot administer sedation to a cat in a garden where there is a possibility of them escaping.
What Happens During a Home Euthanasia Appointment?
Not knowing what to expect can make the prospect of euthanasia even more frightening, so I will explain the process to you before we begin.
When I arrive at your home, there is no need to rush.
I will meet your pet, talk with you about their circumstances and explain what is going to happen. We can decide where your pet will be most comfortable and you can ask any questions you have.
Your pet is then given sedation.
You can remain beside them, stroke them and talk to them while they gradually become deeply sleepy and relaxed.
Once your pet is appropriately sedated, I will administer the final euthanasia medication and guide you through what is happening.
After your pet has passed away, you can have some private time with them to say goodbye.
The appointment is about your pet and your family, and my aim is to make the experience feel as peaceful and unhurried as circumstances allow.
How Quickly Can I Arrange Home Euthanasia in Manchester?
I can usually accommodate an appointment for a gentle goodbye within 2–3 days, and I sometimes have availability for same-day appointments.
Availability varies from day to day, so please contact me and I can let you know what is currently possible.
Wherever possible, I encourage families to get in touch and arrange an appointment in advance, particularly when you can see that your pet’s quality of life is beginning to decline.
Unfortunately, I cannot guarantee availability at very short notice or in an emergency.
If your pet is experiencing severe or uncontrolled suffering and I am unable to reach you quickly enough, please contact your usual veterinary practice or an emergency veterinary service rather than delaying urgent care.
Evening, Weekend and Bank Holiday Appointments in Manchester
A pet’s health doesn’t necessarily deteriorate during normal working hours.
The Loving Vet therefore offers daytime and evening appointments, as well as appointments at weekends and on Bank Holidays, subject to availability.
There is no additional euthanasia charge simply because your appointment takes place in the evening, at the weekend or on a Bank Holiday.
I don’t want a family to feel they need to bring their pet’s goodbye forward simply because waiting until an evening or weekend would result in a higher euthanasia fee.

Sedation tailored to your individual pet is included as part of the euthanasia appointment.
I also do not increase the euthanasia price according to the size or weight of your dog.
Whether your companion is a Chihuahua, Labrador, German Shepherd or giant breed, the home euthanasia price is the same.
Private and communal cremation options are available at an additional cost.

Cremation and Aftercare
You don’t have to make every decision about aftercare immediately.
If you would like me to arrange your pet’s aftercare, The Loving Vet offers both private and communal cremation.
With private cremation, your pet is cremated individually and their ashes can be returned to you.
With communal cremation, your pet is cremated along with other pets communally and ashes are not available for collection or return to you.
You are equally welcome to make your own arrangements if you prefer. Choosing The Loving Vet for your pet’s euthanasia does not mean you are required to use my cremation service.

How do I know when my pet is ready to be put to sleep?
There isn’t always a single sign that tells you the time has come.
Consider your pet’s comfort, mobility, appetite, breathing, toileting, interaction and whether they can still enjoy the things that have traditionally made them happy.
It can also help to keep track of good and difficult days.
You can search online for a pet quality-of-life survey which can give you a structured way to assess different parts of your pet’s wellbeing.
If you are concerned about your pet’s condition or aren’t sure what their symptoms mean, seek veterinary advice.
How far in advance should I book?
Where possible, I encourage owners to contact me before the situation becomes an emergency.

Do you provide emergency home euthanasia?
I sometimes have same-day appointments available, but I cannot guarantee emergency availability.
If your pet is suffering and I cannot attend quickly enough, please contact your normal veterinary practice or an emergency veterinary service.
Will you sedate my pet first?
Yes.
Sedation is an important part of my approach. It allows your pet to become deeply sleepy and relaxed before the final euthanasia medication is given.
Can my dog be put to sleep outside?
If circumstances allow and the garden is somewhere your dog feels happy and comfortable, it can often be possible for their goodbye to take place outside.
Can my cat be put to sleep outside?
A cat must receive their sedation indoors or within a secure, cat-proofed garden.
Even very poorly cats can occasionally move unexpectedly, and I cannot risk a cat escaping while sedation is beginning to take effect.
Can my family be present?
Yes.
One of the advantages of being at home is that you can decide who you would like around your pet.
Should my other pets be there?
They can be if you feel that is appropriate.
Some owners choose to let another pet remain nearby or see their companion after they have passed away. Others prefer to keep them in another room.
There is no requirement either way.
Can children be present?
This is a personal decision depending on your child’s age, understanding and relationship with the pet.
Some families find that being involved allows children to understand what has happened and say goodbye, whereas others decide that being present isn’t appropriate for their child.
Do you charge extra for evening appointments?
No. There is no additional euthanasia charge simply because your appointment takes place during the evening.
Is there an additional weekend or Bank Holiday fee?
There is no additional euthanasia charge simply because an appointment takes place at the weekend or on a Bank Holiday.
Do you charge more for large dogs?
No. The euthanasia price does not increase according to your dog’s size or weight.
Can you arrange my pet’s cremation?
Yes.
