A peaceful goodbye for your pet in familiar surroundings
When a much-loved dog or cat reaches the end of their life, many families would prefer their final moments to be spent somewhere they know and feel safe.
The Loving Vet provides home pet euthanasia in Great Sankey, allowing you to say goodbye to your pet peacefully at home rather than having to make a final journey to a veterinary practice.
I’m Dr Benite Oddy, a veterinary surgeon based in Newton-le-Willows, and I provide home euthanasia appointments throughout Great Sankey and the wider Warrington area.
I know how difficult these appointments can be for families. My approach is gentle and unhurried, giving you time to be with your pet and say goodbye in the way that feels right for you.
Why some families choose to say goodbye at home
Veterinary practices provide an invaluable service throughout our pets’ lives, but when the time comes to say goodbye, some owners would prefer their pet’s final experience not to involve a car journey or unfamiliar surroundings.
This can be especially important for elderly dogs that have become weak or have difficulty walking, and for pets that become anxious when visiting a veterinary surgery.
With a home visit, your pet can stay somewhere they naturally feel comfortable.
That might be curled up in their favourite bed, lying beside you on the sofa or resting on a blanket with their family around them.
For cats, avoiding the carrier and car journey can also make the experience considerably less stressful.
What happens when I visit your home?
When I arrive, we will first talk through what to expect from the process. You’ll have time to ask questions, and there is no need to begin until you feel ready.
Your pet will initially be given a sedative injection.
The purpose of the sedation is to allow them to become deeply relaxed and sleepy while you remain beside them. Once they are deeply relaxed, the final euthanasia medication is administered.
Your pet will lose consciousness before their heart gently stops.
I’ll guide you through the process and explain what is happening so that you can concentrate on comforting and being with your pet.
For dogs, the home euthanasia fee does not increase according to their size or weight, including giant breeds.
Appointments in Great Sankey
I can usually accommodate an appointment for a gentle goodbye within 2 to 3 days and sometimes have availability for same-day bookings.

We encourage owners to try and book ahead where possible, as unfortunately I cannot guarantee availability in an emergency.
Evening, weekend and Bank Holiday appointments
Sometimes several members of a family would like the opportunity to be present, and a daytime appointment isn’t always convenient.
I therefore offer evening, weekend and Bank Holiday home euthanasia appointments in Great Sankey, subject to availability.

If you’re unsure whether the time is right
One of the most difficult questions owners face is knowing when their pet’s quality of life has deteriorated enough that euthanasia should be considered.
Rather than concentrating on one individual symptom, it can help to look at your pet’s life as a whole.
Consider whether they are comfortable, whether they can get up and move around, whether they are eating and drinking, whether they can settle and sleep comfortably, and whether they still show interest in the people and activities they have always enjoyed.
Some owners find keeping a simple record of good days and bad days particularly helpful.
You can also search online for a pet quality of life survey or questionnaire, which can provide a useful framework for thinking about your pet’s wellbeing and discussing the decision with your usual veterinary practice.
Home euthanasia for cats in Great Sankey
Remaining at home can be particularly helpful for cats that find travelling in a carrier or visiting a veterinary practice stressful.
Your cat can remain somewhere familiar while you stay close to them throughout the appointment.
An important note about cats and outdoor sedation
For your cat’s safety, sedation must be given either indoors or in a secure, cat-proofed garden.
Even cats that are elderly, very weak or unwell can occasionally move unexpectedly after the sedative has been administered. If a cat were to escape while becoming sleepy, they could be extremely vulnerable and difficult to safely retrieve.
For this reason, I’m unable to sedate cats in gardens where there is any possibility of them getting out.
Cremation and aftercare
You can decide what you would like to happen after your pet has passed away.
If you would like cremation, The Loving Vet can arrange private or communal pet cremation following the appointment.
With private cremation, your pet is cremated individually and their ashes are returned to you. With communal cremation, individual ashes are not returned.
Some families prefer home burial where this is appropriate.
