When an elderly or poorly pet reaches the end of their life, many families would prefer their final moments to take place somewhere familiar rather than having to make another journey to a veterinary practice.

Why choose home euthanasia for your pet?
For an elderly or unwell pet, simply getting to a veterinary practice can sometimes be difficult.
Dogs with arthritis or reduced mobility may struggle getting into the car. Other dogs can become anxious as soon as they realise they’re going to the vets, while cats may find travelling in a carrier particularly stressful.
Home euthanasia removes that final journey.
Your pet can instead stay somewhere they feel safe and comfortable. This could be on their favourite bed, resting on the sofa, or lying on a familiar blanket with their family beside them.
There is no waiting room and no pressure to leave immediately afterwards. You have the privacy to spend those final moments together in your own home.
What happens during a home euthanasia appointment?
When I arrive at your home in Bamber Bridge, I’ll first spend some time talking you through what to expect and answering any questions you may have.
We don’t need to begin until you are ready.
Your pet will initially receive a sedative injection. This allows them to gradually become very sleepy and deeply relaxed while you remain beside them.
Once your pet is deep in relaxation, I administer the final euthanasia medication. Your pet will lose consciousness before their heart gently stops.
I’ll explain what is happening throughout the appointment so that you can concentrate on comforting and being with your pet.
The euthanasia fee doesn’t increase for larger dogs
Some veterinary euthanasia services charge different prices depending upon a dog’s weight.
With The Loving Vet, the home euthanasia appointment fee does not increase according to the size or weight of your dog, including large and giant breeds.
Appointments in Bamber Bridge
I can usually accommodate an appointment for a gentle goodbye within 2 to 3 days and sometimes have availability for same-day bookings.

We encourage owners to try and book ahead where possible, as unfortunately I cannot guarantee availability in an emergency.
Evening, weekend and Bank Holiday appointments
I understand that saying goodbye to a pet doesn’t always fit conveniently into normal veterinary opening hours.
For this reason, I also provide evening, weekend and Bank Holiday appointments, subject to availability.

How do I know when it is time to say goodbye?
One of the most difficult parts of caring for an elderly or seriously ill pet can be deciding when euthanasia should be considered.
There isn’t always one obvious moment.
Instead, you may gradually notice changes such as your pet struggling to move around, eating less, sleeping considerably more, appearing uncomfortable or becoming less interested in things they previously enjoyed.
It can sometimes help to think about whether your pet is still experiencing more good days than difficult ones.
Keeping a simple record of good and bad days can make gradual changes easier to recognise.
You can also search online for a pet quality of life survey or questionnaire. These can provide a useful framework for considering different aspects of your pet’s wellbeing and discussing any concerns with your usual veterinary practice.
Home euthanasia for cats in Bamber Bridge
Home euthanasia can be particularly helpful for cats that find travelling stressful.
Rather than being placed into a carrier and taken somewhere unfamiliar, your cat can remain in their own home with familiar sights, smells and people around them.
An important note about cats and outdoor sedation
For your cat’s safety, sedation must be given either indoors or in a secure, cat-proofed garden.
Even cats that are elderly, very weak or unwell can occasionally move unexpectedly after the sedative has been administered. If a cat were to escape while becoming sleepy, they could be extremely vulnerable and difficult to safely retrieve.
For this reason, I’m unable to sedate cats in gardens where there is any possibility of them getting out.
Cremation and aftercare
You can decide what you would like to happen after your pet has passed away.
Some families choose home burial where this is appropriate, while others prefer cremation.
The Loving Vet can arrange both private and communal pet cremation following your home euthanasia appointment.
With private cremation, your pet is cremated individually and their ashes are returned to you.
With communal cremation, individual ashes are not returned.
