When a much-loved pet reaches the end of their life, having the option to say goodbye at home can make an incredibly difficult day a little gentler.
The Loving Vet provides compassionate home pet euthanasia in Chorley, allowing dogs and cats to remain in familiar surroundings with the people they love beside them.
I’m Dr Benite Oddy, a veterinary surgeon providing home euthanasia appointments throughout Chorley and the surrounding Central Lancashire area.

Keeping your pet somewhere they know
Older pets can find travelling increasingly difficult.
A dog with arthritis or reduced mobility may struggle getting into and out of the car. Some pets become anxious when visiting a veterinary surgery, while cats can find travelling in a carrier particularly stressful.
With home euthanasia, your pet doesn’t need to make that final journey.
Instead, they can remain somewhere that feels completely normal to them.
Some dogs are happiest curled up in their favourite bed or beside their family on the sofa. Others may prefer lying on a familiar blanket or resting in a quiet part of the home.
Being at home also gives your family privacy. There is no waiting room and no pressure to leave immediately afterwards.
A gentle and unhurried appointment
When I arrive at your home in Chorley, I’ll first talk you through what is going to happen.
There will be time to ask questions, and we don’t need to begin until you are ready.
Your pet will initially receive a sedative injection. This allows them to gradually become very sleepy and deeply relaxed while you remain beside them.
Once they are deeply relaxed, the final euthanasia medication is administered. Your pet will lose consciousness before their heart gently stops.
I will guide you through each stage so that you know what to expect and can concentrate on comforting your pet.
No higher euthanasia fee for larger dogs
The cost of the home euthanasia appointment does not increase according to your dog’s size or weight.
This includes large and giant breeds.

I can usually accommodate an appointment for a gentle goodbye within 2 to 3 days and sometimes have availability for same-day bookings.

We encourage owners to try and book ahead where possible, as unfortunately I cannot guarantee availability in an emergency.

When your pet’s good days are becoming fewer
There isn’t always one particular moment when it becomes obvious that euthanasia should be considered.
With elderly pets and chronic illnesses, changes often happen gradually.
You may begin to notice that your pet is sleeping much more, struggling to move around, eating less or becoming less interested in activities they previously enjoyed.
One question that can sometimes help is whether your pet is still having more good days than difficult ones.
It can be useful to keep a simple diary rather than relying entirely on how things feel on a particular day.
You can also search online for a pet quality of life survey or questionnaire. These can help you consider different aspects of your pet’s wellbeing and may make it easier to discuss your concerns with your usual veterinary practice.
Saying goodbye to a cat at home
For many cats, staying at home avoids two particularly stressful experiences: placing them into a carrier and travelling in the car.
Your cat can instead remain somewhere they know, with familiar smells and the people they trust around them.
An important note about cats and outdoor sedation
For your cat’s safety, sedation must be given either indoors or in a secure, cat-proofed garden.
Even cats that are elderly, very weak or unwell can occasionally move unexpectedly after the sedative has been administered. If a cat were to escape while becoming sleepy, they could be extremely vulnerable and difficult to safely retrieve.
For this reason, I’m unable to sedate cats in gardens where there is any possibility of them getting out.
What happens afterwards?
There is no single right choice about what happens after your pet has passed away.
Some families choose home burial where this is appropriate, while others prefer cremation.
The Loving Vet can arrange private or communal pet cremation following your home euthanasia appointment.
With private cremation, your pet is cremated individually and their ashes are returned to you.
With communal cremation, individual ashes are not available for return to you.
I can explain the different options during the appointment so that you can choose what feels right for you and your pet.
