A gentle goodbye for your pet in the comfort of home
When the time comes to say goodbye to a much-loved dog or cat, many families would prefer their pet to remain somewhere familiar rather than making a final journey to a veterinary practice.
The Loving Vet provides compassionate home pet euthanasia in Leyland, allowing your pet to spend their final moments peacefully at home, surrounded by the people they love.
I’m Dr Benite Oddy, a veterinary surgeon providing home euthanasia appointments across the North West. I regularly travel to the Leyland area as part of my work, making Leyland and the surrounding communities an important part of the area I cover.

Saying goodbye somewhere your pet feels safe
For elderly and poorly pets, travelling can become increasingly difficult.
A dog with arthritis or weakness may struggle getting into the car. Some dogs become anxious when they realise they’re going to the veterinary practice, while many cats find carriers and car journeys stressful.
Choosing euthanasia at home means that final journey isn’t necessary.
Your pet can be somewhere they naturally feel comfortable. This could be resting in their favourite bed, lying beside you on the sofa or settled on a familiar blanket.
There is no waiting room and no unfamiliar clinical environment. Instead, you have the privacy to spend this important time together as a family.
What happens during a home euthanasia appointment?
When I arrive at your home in Leyland, I’ll spend some time talking everything through with you before we begin. You can ask any questions you may have about what to expect and there is no need to rush.
Your pet will initially receive a sedative injection, which allows them to gradually become very sleepy and deeply relaxed while you remain beside them.
Once they are deeply relaxed, the final euthanasia medication is administered. Your pet will lose consciousness before their heart gently stops.
I will explain what is happening throughout the appointment so that you know what to expect and can concentrate on being with your pet.
For dogs, the cost of the home euthanasia appointment does not increase according to their size or weight, including giant breeds.

I can usually accommodate an appointment for a gentle goodbye within 2 to 3 days and sometimes have availability for same-day bookings.

Evening, weekend and Bank Holiday appointments
I understand that family members may want to be together when the time comes to say goodbye, and a daytime appointment isn’t always suitable.
I therefore offer evening, weekend and Bank Holiday appointments in Leyland, subject to availability.
There is no additional appointment charge for evening, weekend or Bank Holiday appointments.
How do I know when the time is right?
Deciding when to say goodbye can be one of the most difficult parts of caring for an elderly or seriously unwell pet.
Sometimes the change is obvious, but often their quality of life deteriorates gradually.
It can help to consider your pet’s comfort, mobility, appetite, ability to rest and sleep, interest in family life and whether they are still enjoying some of the things that previously made them happy.
Some families find it helpful to keep track of good days and bad days, particularly when changes are happening slowly.
You can also search online for a pet quality of life survey or questionnaire. These can provide a useful framework for considering different aspects of your pet’s wellbeing and discussing your concerns with your usual veterinary practice.
Home euthanasia for cats in Leyland
For cats that dislike travelling, being able to remain at home can be particularly beneficial.
They don’t need to be placed into a carrier or taken on a car journey and can instead remain in familiar surroundings while you stay beside them.
An important note about cats and outdoor sedation
For your cat’s safety, sedation must be given either indoors or in a secure, cat-proofed garden.
Even cats that are elderly, very weak or unwell can occasionally move unexpectedly after the sedative has been administered. If a cat were to escape while becoming sleepy, they could be extremely vulnerable and difficult to safely retrieve.
For this reason, I’m unable to sedate cats in gardens where there is any possibility of them getting out.
Pet cremation and aftercare in Leyland

Both private and communal pet cremation options are available.
With private cremation, your pet is cremated individually and their ashes are returned to you. With communal cremation, individual ashes are not returned.
Some families instead choose to keep their pet for home burial where this is appropriate.
