A gentle goodbye for your pet at home
When the time comes to say goodbye to a much-loved pet, many families would prefer their dog or cat to remain somewhere familiar, peaceful and comfortable.
The Loving Vet provides compassionate home pet euthanasia in Euxton, allowing your pet to be gently put to sleep at home with the people they love beside them.
I’m Dr Benite Oddy, a veterinary surgeon providing home euthanasia appointments across Euxton and the surrounding Central Lancashire area.
I regularly travel through this part of Lancashire as part of my work, and Euxton is an area I particularly welcome appointments from.
My aim is to make saying goodbye as calm, gentle and unhurried as possible for both you and your pet.
Saying goodbye somewhere familiar
Older and poorly pets can find travelling increasingly difficult.
Dogs with arthritis, weakness or reduced mobility may struggle getting into a car, while some pets become anxious when visiting a veterinary practice. Cats can also find carriers and car journeys particularly stressful.
Choosing home euthanasia means your pet doesn’t have to make that final journey.
Instead, they can remain somewhere they know — perhaps curled up in their favourite bed, resting beside you on the sofa or lying on a familiar blanket.
You can stay beside them throughout the appointment and have the privacy to say goodbye in your own way.
What happens during the appointment?
When I arrive at your home in Euxton, I’ll first talk everything through with you and answer any questions you may have.
Your pet will initially receive a sedative injection, allowing them to gradually become very sleepy and deeply relaxed while you remain beside them.
Once they are deep in relaxation, I will administer the final euthanasia medication. Your pet will lose consciousness before their heart gently stops.
I’ll explain each stage of the process so that you know what to expect and can concentrate on being with your pet.
For dogs, the home euthanasia fee does not increase according to their size or weight, including giant breeds.
Appointments in Euxton
I can usually accommodate an appointment for a gentle goodbye within 2 to 3 days and sometimes have availability for same-day bookings.
Availability varies from day to day, so please contact me if you need an appointment and I can let you know what is currently possible.
We encourage owners to try and book ahead where possible, as unfortunately I cannot guarantee availability in an emergency.
I also offer evening, weekend and Bank Holiday appointments, subject to availability.
There is no additional appointment charge for evening, weekend or Bank Holiday appointments. For more details on our pricing please check our Services and Costs page.
If you’re wondering whether it may be time
Knowing when to say goodbye can be incredibly difficult, particularly when an elderly pet’s health has declined gradually.
It can help to consider your pet’s overall quality of life rather than focusing on one particular symptom.
Think about whether they are comfortable, eating and drinking, able to move around and settle comfortably, interested in family life and still enjoying some of the things that have always made them happy.
Keeping track of good days and bad days can sometimes make gradual changes easier to recognise.
You can also search online for a pet quality of life survey or questionnaire, which can provide a useful framework for thinking about your pet’s wellbeing and discussing your concerns with your usual veterinary practice.
A note about cats and outdoor sedation
For your cat’s safety, sedation must be given either indoors or in a secure, cat-proofed garden.
Even cats that are elderly, very weak or unwell can occasionally move unexpectedly after the sedative has been administered. If a cat were to escape while becoming sleepy, they could be extremely vulnerable and difficult to safely retrieve.
For this reason, I’m unable to sedate cats in gardens where there is any possibility of them getting out.
Cremation and aftercare
If you would like cremation following your pet’s home euthanasia appointment, The Loving Vet can arrange this for you.
Both private and communal pet cremation options are available.
With private cremation, your pet is cremated individually and their ashes are returned to you. With communal cremation, individual ashes are not returned.
Alternatively, some families choose home burial where this is appropriate.
I can explain the available options and help you decide what feels right for your pet and family.
