A Gentle Alternative to Saying Goodbye at a Veterinary Practice
For an elderly or seriously unwell pet even an ordinary journey can become difficult.
Dogs with painful joints may struggle getting into and out of the car. An anxious dog may associate the veterinary practice with previous stressful experiences. Cats can find being placed into a carrier and transported particularly unsettling.
Choosing euthanasia at home removes that final journey.
There is no waiting room, no unfamiliar clinical environment and no need to move your pet unnecessarily.
Instead, I come to you.
You can choose where your pet is most comfortable and who you would like to be present. There is no need to create a clinical environment in your home as I will adapt the appointment around your pet wherever it is safe and appropriate to do so.
How Do I Know When It Is Time to Say Goodbye?
For many owners, deciding when is considerably harder than deciding where.
It is very common to question whether you’re making the decision too early or leaving things too late.
When considering your pet’s quality of life, it can help to think about changes in their:
- Comfort and pain
- Mobility
- Appetite and drinking
- Breathing
- Toileting
- Sleep and ability to settle
- Interaction with you and the family
- Interest in their normal activities
- Number of good days compared with difficult days
You may also find it helpful to search online for a pet quality-of-life survey or questionnaire. These can provide a more structured way of thinking about the different aspects of your pet’s day-to-day wellbeing and may help you identify changes that have occurred gradually.
A quality-of-life survey isn’t a substitute for veterinary advice or an examination but it can be a useful tool when you’re trying to organise your thoughts and assess how your pet is coping.

Home Dog Euthanasia in Liverpool
Dogs often develop very strong associations with their home and family.
For a dog who is elderly, in pain and struggling with mobility or frightened of veterinary practices, remaining at home can avoid considerable unnecessary stress.
When I arrive, I will spend some time talking to you and getting to know your dog.
I sedate pets before administering the final euthanasia medication. The sedation is selected with your individual pet in mind and allows them to become increasingly sleepy and relaxed while you remain beside them.
Your dog might choose to lie in their usual bed, on a favourite blanket or beside you.
Once your dog is deeply sedated and comfortable, I will guide you gently through the next stage.
There is no need for you to rush your final moments together.
Home Cat Euthanasia in Liverpool
Home euthanasia can be particularly helpful for cats because it removes the need for a final journey in a cat carrier.
An elderly or unwell cat can instead remain within their own familiar territory.
Depending on your cat’s personality, they might prefer their bed, a favourite blanket, the sofa or simply somewhere quiet where they normally feel secure.
Sedation is given before the final euthanasia medication so that your cat can become sleepy and relaxed first.
An Important Note About Cats and Gardens
For your cat’s safety, sedation must be given either indoors or in a secure, cat-proofed garden.
Even cats that are elderly, very weak or unwell can occasionally move unexpectedly after the sedative has been administered. If a cat were to escape while becoming sleepy, they could be extremely vulnerable and difficult to safely retrieve.
For this reason, I am unable to sedate cats in gardens where there is any possibility of them getting out.
Once your cat is safely sedated, I can discuss with you what is appropriate for the remainder of their goodbye.
What to Expect When I Arrive at Your Liverpool Home
I understand that not knowing what to expect can make an already emotional day even more frightening.
When I arrive, I won’t simply walk through the door and immediately begin the procedure.
We will first talk through what is going to happen and you will have an opportunity to ask questions.
We can choose somewhere your pet feels comfortable and discuss who you would like to be present.
Your pet is then given their sedation. As they become sleepy, you can remain with them, stroke them and talk to them.
Once they are deeply sedated, I will administer the final euthanasia medication and explain what is happening as we go.
After your pet has passed away, you can have some private time with them. You don’t have to say goodbye according to somebody else’s timetable.
Evening, Weekend and Bank Holiday Home Euthanasia in Liverpool
It isn’t always possible to predict when an elderly or seriously ill pet’s quality of life will deteriorate.
For that reason, The Loving Vet offers daytime and evening home euthanasia appointments, as well as appointments at weekends and on Bank Holidays.
There is no additional euthanasia charge simply because your appointment takes place during the evening, at the weekend or on a Bank Holiday.
I don’t want a family to feel pressured into choosing a particular day or time solely because saying goodbye later would cost them more.

Pet Cremation and Aftercare in Liverpool
There is no single right choice about what should happen after a pet passes away.
Some families would like their pet’s ashes returned to them, while others prefer communal cremation or wish to make their own arrangements.
The Loving Vet can arrange both private and communal pet cremation.
With private cremation, your pet is cremated individually and their ashes can be returned to you.
With communal cremation, ashes are not individually returned.
You are also welcome to arrange your own aftercare if that is what you would prefer. Choosing my home euthanasia service does not oblige you to choose a cremation service as well.
If possible, it can be helpful to think about aftercare before the day of the appointment. I am very happy to explain the options to you.

How quickly can you come to Liverpool?
I can usually accommodate an appointment for a gentle goodbye within 2 to 3 days and sometimes have availability for same day bookings. Availability varies from day to day, so please contact me if you need an appointment and I can let you know what is currently possible. We encourage owners to try and book ahead as unfortunately I cannot guarantee availability in an emergency.
If your pet is experiencing an emergency or severe uncontrolled suffering and I cannot reach you quickly enough, you should contact an appropriate veterinary practice or emergency veterinary service rather than delaying urgent care.
How can I tell whether my pet still has a good quality of life?
Try to consider your pet’s overall wellbeing rather than concentrating on one symptom.
Eating, drinking, mobility, comfort, breathing, toileting, interaction and whether they still enjoy their normal activities can all contribute to the picture.
You can also search online for pet quality-of-life surveys, which can help you assess these areas more systematically. If you’re concerned about your pet’s health or uncertain about their condition, veterinary advice is appropriate.
Is my pet sedated before euthanasia?
Yes. Sedation is an important part of the way I perform home euthanasia.
My aim is for your pet to become deeply sleepy and relaxed before the final euthanasia medication is administered.
Can my dog be put to sleep in the garden?
Where circumstances and weather allow, this can often be possible if your garden is where your dog feels most comfortable.
Can my cat be put to sleep in the garden?
Cats must receive their sedation indoors or within a genuinely secure, cat-proofed garden.
This is because even a very poorly cat can occasionally move unexpectedly, and a cat escaping while a sedative is beginning to take effect could be extremely vulnerable.
Can the rest of my family be there?
Yes. One of the benefits of home euthanasia is that you can decide who you would like around your pet.
Can children be present?
That decision is entirely personal and will depend upon the child’s age, understanding and relationship with the pet.
Some parents feel being present allows their child to understand what has happened and say goodbye; others decide that being present isn’t appropriate for their child.
What about my other pets?
Other pets can be present if you feel this is right for them. Some owners also allow another pet to see or smell their companion after they have passed away.
There is no requirement to do this.
